Not all decks have to be large. This deck is more like a small landing
for a staircase. We're including this because it illustrates the importance of flashing and what happens
when it is not used. Flashing is usually very thin gauge metal that goes on top of the wood and
underneath the door jamb. In this case, there was no flashing installed below the door. Over a
period of years, this allowed major rain events to saturate the wooden door jamb and slowly let
water drain through onto the underlying wood. Of course this is warm and dark with no air circulation.
So once it was wet, it took forever to dry out, which soon led to rot, which led to a larger project
than the client was anticipating once we removed the door jamb and could see the underlying wood. The
problem was fixed, new flashing was installed and the homeowner was happy!
